Art has always been a huge part of my life. As a child, my favorite activity was making art. In school my favorite classes were the art classes. I taught art at a summer camp, while putting myself through college. I taught art as part of my curriculum while teaching religious school at a synagogue. During my college years I first learned to sew and then I learned to quilt, including all the traditional methods of quilting. In 1998, I began making up my own designs that required my own rules to complete. That is when my work evolved into fiber art.
As a cancer survivor, my fiber art endeavor has taken center stage helping me to heal and give me spiritual strength. During my fight with cancer, I became involved in creating lively works of color to decorate the chemo rooms at the James Cancer Center. Each treatment visit I would donate another art piece for another room. Eventually I, along with a group of ten women, all breast cancer patients in various phases of treatment, gathered together to create The James Stitching Sisters. Our goals were to make and distribute comfort quilts to all women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer at the James Cancer Hospital.
My work has taken various turns in its evolution, as I studied with various masters of the fiber art world; Carol Bryer Fallert, Micky Lawler, Christine Zoller, Vikki Pignatelli, Laura Wasilowski, Ellen Anne Eddy, Maggie Grey, Dale Rollerson, Diane Hire, And Betty Cotton. Fiber art allows me to express my spiritual beliefs, to deal with life and health issues and crises, and allows me to express my joy of life through color, texture, and form. I am currently experimenting with fabric alterations in mixed media formats, and creating pieces in 3 dimensions, as well as spiritual and Judaic religious pieces.
I have several ongoing series. One series focuses on monochromatic use of color. A second series focuses on radial design elements, such as those that occur in kaleidoscopes. A third series focuses on manipulations of fiber, shape, and form using mixed media. My religious work is ongoing-as my inner spiritual voice manifests itself in my art.
